Globe is expanding its Starlink Mobile service to customers traveling to Japan through a partnership with Japanese telecommunications company KDDI.
The expansion allows eligible Globe customers in Japan to use compatible phones for messaging and access to select satellite-enabled applications in areas where conventional cellular coverage is unavailable or limited. The service uses Starlink Mobile’s satellite-to-mobile connectivity through KDDI Japan.
The international access is being offered alongside Globe’s GoRoam Japan service, which combines satellite connectivity with regular terrestrial roaming. According to Globe, supported applications include services for messaging, navigation, and other communication needs in areas with limited mobile coverage.
GoRoam Japan promos are available through the GlobeOne app and GCash, with different options for travelers.
Satellite connectivity for compatible phones
Starlink Mobile is designed to connect compatible smartphones directly to satellites when conventional mobile coverage is unavailable. The service does not require a dedicated satellite terminal or separate device.
For Globe customers using the service in Japan, the listed requirements include:
- A compatible LTE/5G Android or Harmony device
- An active and applicable GoRoam Japan promo
- Mobile data and data roaming enabled
- A clear, unobstructed view of the sky for the best coverage
Globe also distinguishes Starlink Mobile’s direct-to-device connectivity from Starlink’s satellite internet service.
KDDI customers can also use the service in the Philippines
The arrangement also works in the opposite direction. KDDI previously announced that its customers traveling to the Philippines can use Globe’s Starlink service while abroad.v
The companies said the partnership is part of their efforts to extend satellite-enabled roaming beyond areas covered by conventional cellular networks.
GoRoam Japan pricing
Globe lists GoRoam Japan starting at P400 for seven days, including 2GB of all-access data, 1GB of satellite data, and 50 satellite text messages to all networks.
Additional information about the plans and pricing is available through Globe’s Starlink roaming page.
The company said the international Starlink Mobile access is intended to provide connectivity for Globe customers traveling between covered cellular areas and locations where traditional mobile coverage is unavailable.
