Filipinos embrace new ways to move money: Visa report shows digital remittances accelerating as consumer interest in stablecoin grows

MANILA, PHILIPPINES, 22 October 2026 — A Visa-commissioned report on digital remittances found that Filipinos increasingly use digital channels to send and receive money internationally, while awareness of stablecoins remains limited and trust in these digital assets trails that of traditional and digital remittances.
The Money Travels: 2026 Digital Remittances Adoption study surveyed more than 45,000 remittance senders and receivers across 20 markets. Its findings cover consumer behavior, preferences, and attitudes toward cross-border money transfers, including responses from the Philippines.

Philippines Among the Most Active Remittance Markets

According to the report, 72% of Filipino respondents send or receive money multiple times a year, while around 35% do so monthly. The Philippines was identified as the top receiver-led market among the surveyed markets highlighted in the report, including Australia, mainland China, Japan, India, and Singapore.
Some 45% of Filipino respondents said they had received money from overseas in the previous 12 months.
The study also examined why Filipinos send or receive cross-border transfers. Support for essential expenses was cited by 34% of respondents, while 33% identified family or cultural obligations to provide or receive financial support. Another 30% cited gifts for holidays or special occasions.
Digital Transfers and Access to Funds
The survey found that respondents associate digital channels with faster access to remitted funds.
Mobile wallets ranked first for perceived speed, with 44% of respondents saying funds become available instantly through this method. Direct transfers to bank accounts followed at 31%, while debit or credit card transactions through apps or websites accounted for 20%.
By comparison, 18% said in-person transfers at banks, money transfer agents, or stores provided instant access to funds. The report also found that 27% cited difficulties transacting outside normal banking hours, while 19% reported making in-person transactions at physical money transfer locations.
These findings reflect respondents’ reported experiences and perceptions rather than independently measured transaction-processing times.
Stablecoin Awareness and Trust
The report also examined awareness of stablecoins, a type of digital asset designed to maintain a relatively stable value, often by referencing another asset or currency.
Visa’s survey found that 42% of Filipino respondents had some awareness of stablecoins. However, trust in stablecoin transfers stood at 38%, compared with 81% for cash remittances and 79% for digital remittances.
Interest in learning more was higher: 79% of respondents said they wanted additional education about stablecoins and how they work.
The government was identified as a trusted entity for handling digital currencies by 70% of respondents, followed by global payment networks such as Visa at 68%.
The findings indicate a gap between awareness and trust in stablecoin transfers among surveyed Filipinos. The report points to consumer education as one area that could affect understanding and confidence in these payment methods.v
Study Methodology and Limitations
Money Travels 2026 was conducted by Morning Consult on behalf of Visa from February 24 to March 2, 2026. The global study surveyed more than 45,000 remittance senders and receivers across 20 markets. The Asia-Pacific findings covered Australia, mainland China, India, Japan, the Philippines, and Singapore.
The report states that its findings are based on self-reported survey responses. Respondents received definitions of key terms, including stablecoins, before answering questions. Some scenarios involving bank-equivalent protections were hypothetical.
The study also notes that stablecoins are not currently covered by deposit insurance and that its findings reflect consumer awareness, attitudes, and stated intentions rather than legal status or operational availability. The report is for informational purposes and does not constitute financial or legal advice.
