ASUS ROG Zephyrus S GX531GXR Review

Gaming laptops continues to evolve thanks to new technologies that enables it to have new features and come in different impressive form factors, one of which is ASUS’ latest ROG gaming laptop, the GX531GXR packed with Intel’s latest 9th generation CPU and NVIDIA RTX graphics card.

Design

The GX531GXR sports a thin and compact build just like the original GX501, the keyboard and touch-pad are oddly placed on the side which I think some consumers will need to adjust a bit to get used to it. At first glance you will never think that this is a gaming notebook due to its overall look, its 240Hz 3ms,15’6-inch FHD screen with nano bezels is perfect for gamers  on-the-go and and even for content creators, we didn’t have any issues regarding its quality as it did a perfect job on keeping up with high FPS count while playing thanks to its high refresh rate. Multimedia editing junkies are in for a treat as this sports an IPS panel for better color accuracy and details.

GX531GXR also comes in a HDR VESA 400 and the traditional 240hz/3m variant. The width of the super narrow bezel on both sides is merely 6.5mm for a more immersive feel. Furthermore, in order to have the most optimized video recording angle, Zephyrus S keeps the web cam on top of the monitor.

The RGB keyboard is well-placed, the travel distance is just right for typing but the overall feel is a bit off for me as the keys are installed a bit too shallow. I strongly prefer having a separate mechanical keyboard while playing games with this. If you dislike the way the keyboard was built you have to take note that ASUS had to work with this device to make it this thin, they had to create some space on the upper part for better ventilation.

Looking at the sides is where you can locate all of its ports:

Left side:

  • (2) USB 2.0 ports
  • (1) USB Type-C port Gen 3.1
  • Power jack
  • 3.5mm audio jack

Right side:

  • (1) USB 3.0
  • (1) USB Type-C port Gen 3.1

Back side:

  • (1) HDMI 2.0
  • Kensington lock

Unfortunately this unit doesn’t have a Thunderbolt 3 support as you already packed with enough specs for high-end gaming.

Performance

Underneath the hood is an Intel Core 9th gen i7 9750H hexacore processor paired with RTX2080 – MaxQ. I didn’t experience any signs of slow down with this unit as it runs most of my games at decent FPS, however i think ASUS can still do better on their heat management as sometimes the unit can reach as high as 88 degrees Celsius which I can understand at some point due to its impressive thin and light form factor.

  • Thin and Light form factor

Cons

  • Temperature is a bit high when settings is maxed out
  • Not a fan of its keyboard placement
  • HDMI port should be placed on the sides instead

Overall, the GX531GXR is a perfect combination of portability and performance with the latest specs in a thin and light form factor, with few improvements such as keyboard placement and heat management, ASUS is still one of the top brands that sets the standard on mobile gaming.
