Head-to-head: Vivo V9 VS ZenFone 5Q

After being out in the market for a couple of months, we got to try both the ASUS ZenFone 5Q and the Vivo V9 to a head-to-head comparison and check which smartphone is still worth your hard earned money.

ZenFone 5Q

The ZenFone 5Q is just one of the midrange smartphones of ASUS which was released last April 2018. It is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 processor with Adreno 508 GPU in an aluminum body with a premium touch of 2.5D glass back panel and a Full view display.

The Vivo V9, on the other hand, is also a midrange smartphone from Vivo released last March 2018. It sports an older Qualcomm Snapdragon 626 processor with Adreno 506 GPU in a 2.5D curved plastic body and a Full view display. Let’s take a deeper view of both smartphone’s specification on the table below.

Game Performance

We tested both devices’ gaming performance by playing PUBG Mobile. Both phones’ game graphics were set to balanced, while the frame rates were set to medium. PUBG’s optimization on the mobile platform is widely known to be poor even for flagship models so we are not surprised that some stuttering was experienced throughout the game. Though the frame rate is much better and the stuttering is more tolerable in the ZenFone 5Q obviously because of its more efficient and more advanced chipset – the Qualcomm Snapdragon 630. We suggest playing in lower graphics settings for a better gaming experience at least for PUBG.

Camera Performance

We also took out the ZenFone 5Q and the Vivo V9 for a series of outdoor shots to see which smartphone will dominate.

Here, the ZenFone 5Q has a more detailed shot than the Vivo V9. The High Dynamic Range also gave more contrast as it emphasize more shadows to the image.

The Vivo V9’s shot has a warmer but more accurate color on this one as this was shot at around 7:20AM. The ZenFone 5Q, on the other hand, decided to go for a cooler color temperature.

Our Verdict

Both smartphones impressed us with their camera and gaming performance, we can actually recommend it to casual gamers who are looking for budget smartphones that also packs the performance. But if we look at the price, which is P14,995 for the 5Q and P14,999 for the V9, we must say that the ZenFone 5Q wins as it offers more than what the V9 has to offer. The premium build of the ZenFone 5Q and the higher processor and GPU are one of best offerings.
